MARCH
THE MONTH WE ALL PRETEND IT’S SPRING
Color is coming. The wind is coming. The weeds are definitely coming. Let’s get ready!
NOTES FROM A FARMER’S DAUGHTER
March in West Texas is a trust exercise.
The daffodils bloom. The redbuds flirt. The sun feels warm enough to believe in again. And then—just
when you’ve emotionally committed—March throws a 29° curveball with 40 mph wind. Every year, without fail, someone tells me,
“I think we’re past frost.”
And every year, without fail, I say,
“Bless your heart.”
Here’s the thing: gardening here requires optimism…and a backup plan.
March is not about rushing. It’s about preparing. It’s about building soil, planning beds, feeding shrubs, planting hardy color, and setting yourself up for a
spring that doesn’t collapse at the first blue norther.
If you’ve been staring at your yard all winter thinking,
“Well. That looks depressing.”
Good news. This is your month. Let’s wake it up—carefully.

WEST TEXAS REALITY CHECK
Things March Will Do:
- Blow over your lightweight pots
- Convince you it’s tomato season
- Dry your soil out in 12 minutes
- Grow weeds aggressively
Things March Will Not Do:
- Guarantee frost is over
- Water your plants for you
- Calm down
- Your garden is not behind.
It’s on West Texas time.
How Do Plant Experts Help with Garden Planning?
What you CAN safely do in March:
- Feed trees and shrubs
- Plant hardy perennials
- Add cool-season color (snapdragons, dianthus, stock, alyssum)
- Plant fruit trees and berries
- Start herbs
- Apply pre-emergent for crabgrass (timing matters!)
- Refresh mulch before heat hits
What you should maybe not do yet:
- Tomatoes (unless you enjoy emotional damage)
- Peppers
- Squash & cucumbers
Ask us before you gamble.
Aphids: The Tiny Freeloaders
If you see sticky leaves or clusters of tiny green/black bugs on new growth, congratulations. Aphids have arrived for their annual buffet.
They love:
- Roses
- New vegetable growth
- Anything tender and hopeful
Control:
- Blast with water
- Insecticidal soap
- Systemic control if it’s heavy
The earlier you catch them, the less dramatic this gets.
PEST OF THE MONTH
DON’T KILL YOUR PLANTS
Overwatering Is a Year-Round Hobby in West Texas March
sun + wind dries the surface fast.
That does NOT mean the root zone is dry
Before you water:
- Stick your finger 2–3 inches down.
- If it’s cool and moist — walk away.
- If it’s dry — water deeply, not daily.
Shallow watering creates weak roots.
Weak roots do not survive July.
We are gardening for August, not Instagram.

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT
If you’ve ever picked up one of our heavier pots and thought, “Oh. This is serious.”
— that’s Campania.
Handcrafted. High-fired. Built to last.
These aren’t flimsy, one-season containers. They’re statement pieces.
We love them because:
- They age beautifully
- They handle our heat
- They make even simple plantings look intentional
New styles are arriving for spring — classic shapes, rich finishes and the kind of pottery that makes your porch look like you
planned it. Come see them in person. They’re even better up close.
MORE THAN A GARDEN CENTER
If you haven’t wandered the showroom lately, you’re missing half the fun.
Beyond the plants, we’ve stocked the shelves with:
- Heirloom quality outdoor and patio furniture
- Garden décor & statement pieces
- Seasonal home accents
- Giftable finds (the kind you grab for a birthday and keep for yourself)
- Planters, tools & beautiful everyday garden essentials
- It’s not just a greenhouse — it’s a full showroom.
Come for a flat of color.
Leave with something you didn’t know you needed.
ROOTED IN GRATITUDE
Every season looks a little different around here.
Some years it’s windier.
Some years it’s drier.
Some years we’re all learning as we go.
But what never changes is this:
You choose to garden anyway.
You show up with questions.
You try again after a freeze.
You plant something hopeful in soil
that doesn’t always make it easy.
And you choose to do it with us.
For a family business that’s been here for
decades, that matters more than we can say.
Thank you for trusting us with your yards,
your porches, your projects, and sometimes your plant emergencies.
We’re grateful to grow with this community — season after season.
